The ilmin museum of art used to be the office building of the Dong-a Ilbo, the newspaper company, for the 66 years-from 1926 to 1992. The building of the museum is a symbol of the democratization of the press, and is designated as the tangible cultural asset No. 131 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. This old building has undergone several renovations to keep abreast with the development of Dong-a Ilbo, and was transformed in 1996 into a museum of contemporary art. However, the restoration of the historic aspects of this building emerged as a main topic surrounding its renovation, as the opening of the Dong-a Media Center next to the museum was due in 2000. The restoration of a ?ong-standing?future by recalling history to our minds was the answer to our question about how to revive the original visage of the building, the vision and expectations of those who worked in or visited this place. This lead us to a renovation project to link the old and the new and the translucent and the transparent in the architectural respect. Made out of transparent glass and steel, a new entrance facing the Dong-a Media Center and an atrium rising through the interior of the museum have been added. The atrium also functions as a service area for visitors to get information about the whole structure of the museum building. Moreover, with the intention of securing more space for various exhibitions, the exhibition rooms on the first and the second floor have been redesigned to be connected with each other, while the old office of the late Kim, Sang-man has been moved from the second floor to the third floor. At the same time, we purposedly left the eight columns and crossbeams bare, in order to visualize the dynamic development of Dong-a Ilbo. Also, despite the inconvenience in displaying artworks, we opened the window bay to the public, which provides an accent to the building, in order for the audience to view it from the inside.

The office building of Dong-a Ilbo was constructed in the Kwanghwamun area in response to our wish for a righteous press for the nation under the rule of Japanese imperialism. At the start, the office building in the Kwanghwamun area was a three-story modern architecture with a basement made out of iron bars and concrete mixed with bricks. Though adopting a Renaissance style, it creates a pure and elegant mood by simplifying all the details.

The official building of the Dong-a Ilbo in the Kwanghwamun area has been taking firm hold as a symbol of national pride, as it maintained its position throughout the hard times troubled with vicissitudes such as the prohibition of publication. The building was extended according to the current of the times, so that has been expanded with two columns added in 1958 and with two stories added in 1962.

Since the restoration of independence from the Japanese Colonization, the official building of the Dong-a Ilbo in the Kwanghwamun area, a symbol of the democratic press, has been expanded to be a six-story building with a basement.

Even though the official building in the Kwanghwamun area has been extended several times, it was still too small to follow up the expansion of the company. Therefore, another official building was constructed in the Chungjeong-no area, and the building in the Kwanghwamun area was turned into a place for ilmin museum of art, which preserves and studies Ilmin Collection and introduces the contemporary arts.
